I’m all about extraordinary. I come from an Eritrean and Nigerian background, with a family who had no desire to support me in my journey to the entertainment realm. But I followed my dreams and look at me now.
That’s why I’m doing this segment: the best rappers you’ve never heard of. To honor people who are following their dreams.
The first example is one I’m recommending to you personally: Siimba Liives Long, repping Ethiopia!
Siimba was born in New York but grew up in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. The reason I love this dude is because he aims to show that the Habesha culture as well as the African culture is a beautiful thing. He has music clips where he’s surrounded by lions; when I asked him what the deal was, he told me, “I’ve always had an obsession with lions and are also big symbols in Ethiopian culture. The lion of Judah is even on some versions of the flag. I’ve seen pictures of kings back in the day kicking it with lions and I was like, ‘Yeah, that gotta be me.’”
Siimba now lives in Brooklyn, and he looks up to Nas, 2Pac, G Unit, The Fugees, DMX, and OutKast. Not only does he have a new mixtape, Zemenays Gemiinii, but we just found out he’s about to go on tour with Rae Sremmurd, Tye Dolla Sign, and Tyga.
Thanks for making us proud, bro. Shout out to the Habeshas making a stamp in this industry. Take over!
